What Version of Trousers Should I Use?
Should I use Version 2.2?
Summary Answer:
- New users: Yes. No reason to begin with an earlier version of Trousers.
- Trousers 1.0 users: Yes. Strongly recommended.
- Trousers 2.0 / 2.1 users: Suggested yes. You may wish to click here to see how your version differs from 2.2.
Remarks:
- The jump from
Trousers 1.0 to Trousers 2.0 (and thus 2.1 and 2.2) is
large. Trousers 1.0 is a 16-bit application whereas
versions 2.0 and above are 32-bit XP-compatible version of
Trousers. Trousers 1.0 is incompatible with recent versions of
Windows ODBC. In addition, Trousers 2.0 included significant
functional enhancements over Trousers 1.0. Upgrading from version
1.0 to 2.2 requires you to import data from 1.0 into the 2.2
database. This is typically a smooth process but at times
upgrading from 1.0 has required author support.
- The jumps from
Trousers 2.0 to 2.1 and 2.1 to 2.2 are smaller, consisting of short
lists of modest enhancements and bug fixes. However, upgrading is
a snap and takes seconds to do (you just obtain a file from the Downloads page and then run it). So there is no reason not to upgrade.
Should I Upgrade to Version 2.3 when it becomes available?
Current
plan, subject to change, is for version 2.3 to be identical or nearly
so to 2.2 except that 2.3 will have expanded capability for non-English
data. Schools which dialogue in English will have little
preference between 2.2 and 2.3. Schools which dialogue in other
languages may be very interested in 2.3.
